The ‘learning to ride’ holiday experience for riders of all skill levels

Introduction to Riding

On this three day introduction to riding in the hills, our aim is for you to feel at home with your horse and enjoy being in the saddle as you ride the tracks and trails of the Shropshire and Wales borders. Even those with little or no previous experience will soon be able to prepare their horse for the trail – catch, feed, groom, and tack up. The course takes place out in the hills, including a canter on Oswestry’s historic Old Racecourse!. As such it is also ideal for those wishing to come along and introduce a non-riding friend to the pleasures of horseback travel and horse holidays.

Relaxed guidance and instruction

Our instruction and guidance offered is always relaxed, friendly and informal. All of our horses are patient and understanding. By the end of one of our trail holidays, most riders’s confidence will have significantly increased and will be happy with all the basics of riding a horse.

Stay in our rural, countryside B&B

Ride out from Oswestry Equestrian Centre across the Shropshire Hills and return in the evening to our onsite, luxury barn conversion. The accommodation can be in the style of a traditional B&B or alternatively, for larger parties and groups can be hired as a self-catering holiday cottage.

Fitness and weight

An important factor to consider when booking your holiday is that you need to be fit, have a sense of adventure , keen to learn, and most importantly- you must enjoy the great outdoors come rain or shine!

Everyone is welcome but we do have guidelines regarding a rider’s height and weight. Our weight limit is set at 94 Kgs / 14 Stone 11lb / 207 Lbs. These are just guidelines however. If your weight or height comes above these guidelines, please contact us prior to booking and we will assess your needs and abilities.

There is a maximum of 6 riders on an learn to ride horse holiday. This means everyone gets plenty of individual one on one attention from our experienced guide. Your guide is a professional and knowledgeable adult who has undergone a large amount of training in all routes and horses and in communicating with people. All our guides have plentiful experience of introducing people to hills and horses. They love what they do.

Set dates or bespoke dates

Your holiday can be run on any set dates throughout our season. Alternatively you can have your own personal guide just for your own group starting and finishing on any dates during our season.

Whilst on your stay

During the trail riders will be offered instruction in; catching, grooming, feeding, checking hooves and tacking up (putting on headcollar, bridle, saddle, numnah ).

Your riding experience

Before we set out on our hacks, an assessment of your riding abilities is taken and you will be made familiar with your horse for the duration of your holiday. The assessment can either be in our large indoor riding-school or our outdoor riding school which shows off the stunning panoramic views of the Welsh
